Dedicated protection for vulnerable trackside cabling infrastructure All too often vital trackside cabling can be the subject of accidental damage caused by debris, weather conditions and even vandal attacks.
The use of protective flexible conduit systems, where the cable is at its most susceptible, can prevent such damage particularly where the cabling is installed in isolated and vulnerable locations. Such systems as overbraided metallic systems from Adaptaflex can offer a galvanized steel conduit with weather resistant PVC covering and completed with a stainless steel overbraid. This protects the cable from impact damage and from being exposed, especially where it goes into junction boxes and enclosures. Its use ensures that no part of the cable is left exposed and vulnerable to external elements.
Adaptaflex the UK's market leading flexible conduit manufacturer produces high quality, high performance products are approved by a range of recognised industry standards from LUL and BSI, in addition to SNCF, Deutsche Bahn and Siemens, Alstom, Bombardier etc. and is specified and used on some of Europe's leading rail applications not only on trackside and infrastructure, but also on the locomotive and carriages.
The fact that conduits can be specified and used in extreme environmental situations where temperatures can range from tropical to sub zero and prevailing conditions can be highly corrosive. This, combined with the requirement for products that can withstand significant vibration, offer high water ingress protection – up to IP69K where required – and can be made from halogen free, low smoke and low toxicity materials, means that Adaptaflex has to have products of the highest technical and operational capability.
Where the applications calls for use in areas that are heavily populated by the general public low fire hazard flexible conduit systems are called for, of which Adaptaflex is the foremost developer and manufacturer in the industry. Extensively used within terminal and station areas as well as underground stations and tunnels, there are a number of systems that are available including PEEK, a Hi-Spec, specialised Polyketone, non metallic flexible conduit systems that offers Super Low Fire Hazard performance.
Both the Adaptaflex PK and LFH-SP conduit systems meet London Undergrounds General Use criteria and have the additional assurance of meeting the highest approval standard Class 1 under LUL's ‘Materials for Use in Underground Locations'. Both of these products can also be supplied with the damage and abrasion resisting stainless steel braiding or a high screening level, tinned copper braid.
Adaptaflex flexible conduit systems are all subjected to third party accreditation to the EN50086/IEC61386 Standard via the British Standards Institution (BSI Kitemark scheme). IEC conformance guarantees that the company's products meet performance specifications for fatigue life, operating temperature, non-flame propagation, IP ratings amongst other criteria.
Full details of the range of Adaptaflex systems for trackside and rail infrastructure applications are available in the comprehensive new Critical Power & Data Cable Protection catalogue from Adaptaflex or on the company website at www.adaptaflex.com.
