Flexible conduit systems from Adaptaflex land at Heathrow’s Terminal 5 The largest construction project in the UK and one of the biggest in Europe in recent years is the gigantic Heathrow Terminal 5 building. It incorporates highly sophisticated communications and security systems parts of which are protected by significant amount of flexible conduit systems from Adaptaflex.
The overall design style of the building is of a clean and natural finish, something its operators BAA were keen to achieve. The plain galvanized finish of Adaptaflex S Type metallic flexible conduit complements this perfectly.
Installed to carry and protect communications and security systems throughout the building, the work was carried out by ntl:Telewest, part of the Virgin Media Group, who were responsible for all the communications, data and security CCTV cabling throughout the terminal as well as satellite buildings. The company was one of the first to install infrastructure at T5.
T5 is supported by some of the most advanced technology and the bespoke network provides the foundation for all the airport's hi-tech needs. The high-bandwidth network backbone includes 2.5 million metres of cables, Data LAN and security solutions. The advanced ntl:Telewest IP infrastructure is designed to carry voice, data and operational systems within the terminal ranging from CCTV to access control, building management and control systems.
Adaptaflex Type S Adaptasteel metallic flexible conduit system offers an inherent low fire hazard galvanized steel conduit and used with standard straight fitting offers an ingress protection of IP40. It is highly flexible and offers easy to install characteristics.
“We have many examples of Type S being used as part of the design theme of buildings from lighting schemes through to data cabling as it is in the Terminal 5 application,” explained Ann Timmons of Adaptaflex. “From straight runs attached to vertical walls right through to architectural ‘swan neck' drops to giant uplighters the system provides a pleasing and effective cable protection system while complementing the design concept of a building.
“Equally it can be used to run from cable trays to point of use either in underfloor or overhead systems.”
